Hamster sand bath

Hamsters clean their coats by rolling in sand, never with water. Use chinchilla sand (not chinchilla dust, which is far too fine) or washed play sand with no additives, in a container it can roll around in. Leave it in the cage all the time, scoop out the mess daily and replace it every one to two weeks.

What a sand bath is for

On the steppe, hamsters roll in sand to strip grease and dirt from their fur. At home they do the same: a sand bath helps keep their coat clean and fluffy, and they love digging in it too. Many also use it as a toilet, which makes cleaning the cage easier.

Which sand to use and which to avoid

  • Yes: chinchilla sand or rodent bathing sand, medium grain and unscented.
  • Yes: washed children’s play sand with no additives, baked first to dry it and kill any bugs.
  • No: chinchilla dust, far too fine; it gets breathed in and can harm their lungs.
  • No: cat litter, or sand with calcium, scents or dyes.
  • No: sand from outdoors or the beach, which may carry salt, parasites or debris.

To test whether a sand is too fine, add a little water: if it turns into sticky mud or puffs up dust when moved, it will not do.

The container

It must be big enough for the hamster to fit fully and roll around: for a dwarf, about 15 × 20 cm or more. A heavy ceramic dish, a glass tray or a wooden box with an opening all work. Avoid thin plastic, which it will chew. Put in 3 or 4 cm of sand so it can dig.

How often to clean it

  • Every day: scoop out droppings and clumped sand with a sieve or a spoon.
  • Every one to two weeks: replace it all and wash the container.
  • If it is used as a toilet, it may need changing more often.

Why not bathe it in water

A wet hamster chills very quickly and loses the natural oils that protect its coat, and a bath is very stressful. Only a vet should clean one with water, in specific cases. If your hamster’s coat is often dirty or greasy, it may be missing a sand bath or something may be wrong; go over its basic care and see a vet if it does not improve.

In Nibbly they bathe in sand too

The Nibbly cage has its own sandbox, and your hamsters use it like real ones:

  • They go off on their own to dig and bathe in the sand, which keeps them clean and happy.
  • Left alone, the sandbox gets dirty too and needs cleaning, like the rest of the cage.
  • You can reward them while they dig so it becomes a habit.

Frequently asked questions

What sand is safe for hamsters?

Chinchilla sand or rodent bathing sand, unscented, or washed and baked play sand. Avoid chinchilla dust, cat litter and sand with calcium or scents.

Can hamsters use chinchilla dust?

No. It is so fine that the hamster breathes it in, which can cause breathing problems. Use a medium-grain sand.

How often should I change my hamster’s sand?

Scoop out the mess every day and replace it all every one to two weeks. More often if it is used as a toilet.
